Wednesday 18th February 2009 - Marisol

What a shock to walk into the studio on Wednesday and see Marisol, who used to have dread-locked hair almost to her waist with a short crop. I partly chose this angle for the novelty of seeing the back of her neck!

Wednesday 21st January 2009 - Allessanda

A second week of the same pose with Allessanda. I think last week's painting was stronger in composition but I prefer the skin tones in this one.

Wednesday 14th January 2009 - Lost in a good book

The lovely Allessandra posed for us again - I did a couple of paintings of her last year that both turned out well, so she is a 'lucky model' for me!

Wednesday 5th November 2008 - Allessandra

A second week with the lovely Allessandra. I was very pleased with the one I did last week and it's already framed and in the gallery. What a great model, or maybe she just inspires me because I was happy with this one too.

Wednesday 1st October 2008 - Melissa's

A new model this week and a great change to paint the different skin tones, lots of peach and pink with red hair. I'll finish this one off next week.

Wednesday 17th September 2008 - Nina

Nina is such a lovely model!
The day before I was on duty, manning the gallery, and I brought along a book by Richard Schmidt and his painting techniques for the figure. It was very interesting and he gets some very unusual effects. I let what I had read influence me in this painting and started with a darker and looser under-painting for texture and depth to make the skin tones glow against the background.
I was pleased with the way this one came out and will experiment with these new ideas some more.

Wednesday 30th July 2008 - Julie
I quite wore myself out on Saturday with the portrait group in the morning and painting all afternoon at the fund-raiser - maybe going out dancing that night didn't help, but I ended up taking a few days off from painting and paid my bills, did some gardening and housework etc.

By Wednesday I was itching to paint again and went to Melissa's group with Julie as our model. I tried something a little different this time, getting closer up and focussing on a smaller part of the body and the black background forced me to push my values a little more than usual.

In the evening I went to my first Sage Gallery Co-op meeting as I am to hang my work on Saturday. I used to be in a housing co-op when I lived in London and they voted me in as membership secretary and to my surprise, at my first meeting with this co-op, they voted me in as membership secretary - how strange is that? They are a friendly, helpful bunch - quite co-operative (ha ha) and I have a feeling i will do well.

Wednesday 14th May 2008 - Laurie

I decided to try a completely different approach this time. I've been feeling that my paintings could have more contrast in them, that I don't take them as dark as maybe I could, so I primed the canvas with dark chocolate brown and came up from there. it was an interesting experiment.
It was also a very difficult painting to photograph as the light reflected off the shiny surface no matter what i did - if anyone has any advice on how to do that I would be very grateful!

Wednesday 26th March 2008 - Alexandra

I don't know if it was the quick painting session on Monday or the sugar free diet I've put myself on giving me extra clarity, but this painting went very well indeed. I feel i achieved a similar result in one session to what i can usually pull off in two. In fact, a couple of artists whose opinions I respect came up to me half way through after only an hour and a half and said it's finished, don't do any more. I did continue, putting in more detail on the hands and face, but was careful not to lose the looseness overall.
